Is Your Website Animation Hiding the Message?

Motion earns its place when it helps people follow the content and use the page.

Is Your Website Animation Hiding the Message?
From the Select Creatives conversation with Candice of Sculpt 25 Creative.

Watch what moves over what

In the live review, a scrolling image treatment obscures text on a tablet. The problem is concrete: the visitor cannot clearly read the information underneath. The issue is not simply the presence of animation, but the way the moving elements interact with the content.

Review animated sections at different screen sizes and scroll positions. Pay attention to overlap, reading order and whether a person can pause long enough to understand the message. A transition that works in a presentation may behave differently when someone scrolls at their own pace.

Assign a purpose to each effect

Motion can draw attention to a change, connect two states or explain how an interface behaves. Describe the intended purpose before deciding on the treatment. If the team cannot explain what an effect helps the visitor do, simplify it and compare the result.

Important information should remain understandable without waiting for a carefully timed sequence. Avoid making someone replay an interaction to recover a headline or discover a button.

Review the quiet version too

Check the page with reduced motion enabled and make sure the content remains available. Consider a simpler static composition for small screens when the animated version becomes crowded.

For every effect, review clarity, responsiveness and the next action together. Keep the motion that supports the journey. Rework the motion that competes with it. The finished experience should make the content easier to follow, including when the visitor scrolls quickly.

Put the review into practice

Choose one customer journey on your website and review it with these questions in mind. If you need an outside perspective, discuss your website with Select Creatives.
